Meditation

Meditation is a skill – a very valuable skill.  The purpose of meditation is to heal and transform.  The skill and practice of meditation has been in the realm of the human experience for thousands of years.  Meditation is documented in all known religions as is most commonly expressed as prayer, however you do not need to be religious or a member of a religious group to benefit from the practice of meditation. Science is now mapping the powerful effects of meditation showing the many health benefits of this practice and the business world and educational institutions are is examining the wisdom of meditation and its effects on learning, wellbeing, productivity and results.

 

Because meditation is a skill you can practice meditation anywhere at any time. In every moment you can chose to meditate.   There are many forms of meditation ranging from seated meditations, silent meditations, walking meditations, guided meditations to prayer and living one’s life a in a state of continuous mindful meditation.  Seated meditation is the most well known and practiced form of meditation.

 

 

Mindfulness

The energy that crafts and guides the practice of meditation is mindfulness.  Mindfulness allows us to look deeply and move beyond the ‘busyness of our mind.   It allows us to focus on an object with single pointed attention.  When mindful we are focused and not distracted.  We are able to pay careful attention to that object.  That object could be a sound, an image, a thought, however the most common focus for meditation is the breath, especially for those beginning meditation practice.

 

Whether you are new to meditation or an experienced practitioner the meditations contained in this book are for anyone at any level.  They have been designed to allow us to focus on daily tasks and challenges we experience in every day life.  These meditations are tools to help us reflect upon our actions and make wise choices about how we perceive and interpret events and actions, and how we act. Too often, in this busy world, we jump to inaccurate conclusions leading to incorrect interpretations which creates more anxiety and distress in our lives.  Rather than react to life, these meditations give us a chance to help us make better choices and ‘act’ in a manner which services us and others in more positive ways.
